What is trophon2?

Every day, 98,000 patients are protected from the risk of cross contamination because the ultrasound probe has been high-level disinfected with the trophon® device.

Since the trophon device’s launch in North America in 2011, there have been over 25,000 trophon devices installed throughout healthcare facilities across North America. This equates to patients being protected from the risk of cross-contamination in more than 100 million procedures. But this is only the start. Millions of procedures remain unprotected by trophon technology. trophon technology has redefined the global standard of care in ultrasound probe reprocessing, providing fail-safe ultrasound probe high level disinfection (HLD).

With the introduction of the trophon®2 device, the world's best just got better. The trophon2 device has an enhanced user experience for greater workflow efficiencies and traceability across the workflow for demonstrated compliance, to deliver consistent patient protection with every automated HLD cycle.

The trophon device is the only automated HLD technology for transvaginal, transrectal and surface probes to meet mandatory microbial efficacy test requirements for both CE mark and FDA registration.

In addition to mandatory testing, the trophon device is demonstrated to eliminate an extended range of clinically relevant pathogens including multi-drug resistant bacteria, blood borne viruses and sexually transmitted pathogens.

Microbial Defence

An extensive list of pathogens have been implicated in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). High level disinfection (HLD) of semi-critical medical devices such as ultrasound probes is an essential part of the fight against HAIs.

Nanosonics has conducted extensive laboratory testing to validate the effectiveness of trophon and its sonicated disinfectant mist technology

As a result, the trophon device is the only automated HLD technology for transvaginal, transrectal and surface ultrasound probes to meet mandatory microbial efficacy test requirements for both CE mark and FDA registration.

This includes testing that meets the required EN, ASTM and AOAC standards to demonstrate:1-3

  • Bactericidal efficacy
  • Virucidal efficacy (enveloped and non-enveloped viruses)
  • Fungicidal efficacy
  • Mycobactericidal efficacy

Going Beyond the Mandatory Requirements

In addition to mandatory testing, the trophon device is demonstrated to eliminate an extended range of clinically relevant pathogens including:

  • Multi-drug resistant bacteria, such as MRSA
  • Blood borne viruses sexually transmitted pathogens, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, hepatitis A, B and C as well as HPV
  • Clostridium difficile spores
Vegetative bacteria Fungi
Staphylococcus aureus Trichophyton mentagrophytes
Pseudomonas aeruginosa Viruses
Salmonella choleraesuis Polio virus type 1
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Herpes simplex virus type 1
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis Hepatitis A virus
Carbapenam-resistant Escherichia coli Adenovirus type 2
Neisseria gonorrhoea Human hepatitis B virus surrogate (duck hepatitis B virus)
Chlamydia trachomatis (serotype K) Human immunodeficiency virus type 1ϯ
Mycobacteria Human norovirus surrogate
Mycobacterium terrae Human rotavirus
Bacterial endospores Human papillomavirus (HPV16 and HPV18)
Clostridium difficileϯ Hepatitis C virus surrogate (Bovine viral diarrhoea virus)
Clostridium sporogenesϯϯ
Bacillus subtilisϯϯ

the trophon device has been shown to inactivate these pathogens in laboratory tests.

†† Effective at extended contact time per FDA requirements for HLDs.

The trophon device Performance Demonstrated in Clinical Settings

The trophon device outperforms other methods of disinfection that have been tested in similar clinical settings:4,5

  • Low level disinfection (LLD) wipes fail to systematically remove bacterial contamination from patient-used ultrasound probes.4
“We chose the trophon system because it stood out from the rest. We like the efficacy of the product and the fact it’s proven to kill high-risk, cancer-causing HPV”
Lisa Antsy
Manager of Medical Reprocessing
Grand River Hospital in Ontario, Canada

* Broadest efficacy spectrum as compared to ultrasound probe disinfection with UVC and ClO2 wipes systems.

The trophon® family includes trophon® EPR and trophon®2 which share the same core technology of 'sonically activated' hydrogen peroxide.

Demonstrated Compliance

Accrediting agencies look for traceability processes that are compliant with evidence-based standards and guidelines. The trophon2 device with AcuTrace® RFID technology simplifies the creation of accurate digital records, easily obtained from your trophon2 device to support audit-readiness.

Automated Digital Traceability Across the Workflow

The trophon2 device increases user compliance and supports audit-readiness through automation, capturing data across the entire reprocessing workflow.

AcuTrace RFID technology records operator, probe and cycle data to capture and demonstrate user compliance.

AcuTrace-enabled consumables and accessories include:

  • trophon NanoNebulant®
  • trophon Chemical Indicator
  • trophon Operator Card
  • trophon Medical Instrument Tag

Audit-Ready Compliance and Archiving

AcuTrace technology simplifies the creation of accurate digital records, accessible on your trophon2 device to support audit-readiness. AcuTrace technology electronically captures disinfection data in accordance with requirements in USA, CAN, ANZ, UK & EU.1-14
